The Shawshank Redemption is an oldie; but a goodie! Written by the famous Stephen King and directed by Frank Darabont. The lead roles: Morgan Freeman as Red and Tim Robbins as Andy Dufresne.

The movie signifies the struggles of prison life; especially when being wrongfully convicted of a crime. However, overarching the horror of the prison is the bond between two prisoners, their journey of friendship is showcased throughout the film. The main themes to the film are is Andy innocent and will he escape successfully.
One thing I appreciate from the film is that the prisoners characters are formed within the storyline, they are not just depicted from their crimes or how they portray themselves. Therefore, this enables the viewer to become engaged with the characters as they encapsulate the emotion created. Especially after witnessing the hardship Andy faces during his time in the prison, the viewer is grasped by the emotive viewing, thus, empathy is felt for Andy at several points during the movie. Andy experiences difficulties with other inmates, guards and at times the warden. Many times the viewer has hopes for Andy when he is beginning to overturn his troubles, but just like Andy the viewer gets knocked back down again.

This film is a journey from start to finish, Andy is on a journey and he takes the viewer with him every step of the way. In my opinion the storyline was pieced together effectively, where there were triumphs there were also defeats, and where there was laughter there was also action/thrill. At times it is incomprehensible where the story may lead to next, which is another great aspect to this film it is unpredictable in many ways.

If you haven’t already seen this film, then I believe you should go ahead and watch it right now! It’s an absolute classic and an excellent watch.
